Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a dimensionless quantity that measures the total one-sided leaf area per unit ground surface area. It is a critical biophysical parameter used to characterize vegetation canopy structure and function. In India, LAI is extensively employed in agriculture, forestry, and climate research. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and state agricultural departments utilize satellite-derived LAI data for crop monitoring, yield estimation, and drought assessment.
