Kashmir Saffron Mission
Full Form of KSM
What is KSM?
The Kashmir Saffron Mission (KSM) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Government of India in 2015 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. It is specifically designed to revive and boost saffron cultivation in the Kashmir Valley, particularly in the traditional growing areas of Pampore, Budgam, and Kishtwar. The mission focuses on increasing productivity through scientific interventions, improved irrigation, quality planting material, and post-harvest management. KSM is implemented in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir government and various agricultural research institutions. It plays a critical role in supporting local farmers, enhancing the quality of Kashmiri saffron (known for its global demand), and improving the socio-economic conditions of the region. The scheme is discussed in government policy documents, agricultural journals, and competitive exam syllabi. For UPSC aspirants, knowing about KSM is relevant under the subject of agriculture and government schemes in India. The mission has helped in expanding the area under saffron cultivation and increasing yield, thereby strengthening the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
