Kandla Port Trust
Full Form of KPT
What is KPT?
KPT stands for Kandla Port Trust, one of India's major seaports located on the west coast of Gujarat in the Gulf of Kutch. Established in 1955, it was India's first major port developed after independence to ease congestion at the Mumbai port and handle the increasing trade volume with neighbouring landlocked countries including Afghanistan, Iran, and the Central Asian republics. The port is operated and managed by a Board of Trustees under the administrative control of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, in accordance with the Major Port Trusts Act of 1963. In 2017, the port was officially renamed Deendayal Port Trust in honour of former Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, though the original abbreviation KPT still remains widely recognised in trade documents and competitive exam circles. It handles a significant share of India's petroleum, chemicals, food grains, and container cargo, making it one of the busiest ports on the western coast. The port also plays a strategic role in supporting the India-Afghan trade corridor through the Northern Gateway. Questions related to KPT frequently appear in competitive examinations including UPSC Civil Services, SSC, banking exams, and various state-level public service commissions, where candidates are tested on their awareness of Indian maritime infrastructure and major ports.
