Jawahar Path Jyoti Yojana
Full Form of JPJ
What is JPJ?
The Jawahar Path Jyoti Yojana (JPJ) is a rural road lighting initiative implemented by the Government of India through state governments. It aims to install solar or electric streetlights on village roads and panchayat links, improving visibility and security for pedestrians and vehicles after dark. The scheme is part of the broader rural infrastructure push under the Ministry of Rural Development. JPJ is typically executed in conjunction with the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to light newly constructed rural roads. State governments identify dark stretches and apply for central funding under the scheme. JPJ has been particularly successful in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, where large rural populations rely on unlit roads. The scheme promotes women's safety and allows children to study in the evening. It also reduces accidents and livestock theft. For competitive exams like UPSC, state PCS, and SSC, JPJ appears as a topic in the Indian Polity and Rural Development sections. Understanding its funding pattern and target areas is important for candidates. The scheme is monitored through a web-based dashboard and uses energy-efficient LED lights to reduce maintenance costs. As of 2023, over 2 million streetlights have been installed under JPJ across India.
