What is JPAL?
The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center founded by Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, and Sendhil Mullainathan at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Its primary mission is to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy decisions are grounded in scientific evidence, particularly through randomized controlled trials (RCTs). In India, J-PAL has been instrumental in shaping development programs across education, health, agriculture, and governance. For instance, its studies on remedial tutoring and community-based monitoring have influenced the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and National Rural Health Mission. J-PAL works closely with Indian state governments, NGOs, and the central government to design, implement, and evaluate interventions. The lab’s network of affiliated professors and researchers at Indian institutions like the University of Delhi, Indian Statistical Institute, and IITs conducts rigorous field experiments in diverse settings—from rural Bihar to urban Mumbai. J-PAL’s evidence is widely referenced in competitive exams such as the UPSC Civil Services Examination, especially in questions related to poverty alleviation, program evaluation, and public policy. Understanding J-PAL is crucial for anyone preparing for the Indian Economic Service, RBI Grade B, or state-level civil services exams, as it represents a data-driven approach to tackling India’s most persistent development challenges.
