What is JP?
JP, also known as Loknayak Jay Prakash Narayan, was a towering Indian freedom fighter, socialist leader, and political reformer. Born in 1902 in Bihar, he was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and played a pivotal role in the Quit India Movement. After independence, JP emerged as a vocal critic of authoritarianism and corruption. In the 1970s, he led the famous 'JP Movement' or 'Total Revolution' movement, which aimed at establishing a participatory democracy and eradicating social and economic injustice. His call for 'Sampoorna Kranti' (Total Revolution) galvanised students, peasants, and civil society, ultimately leading to the Emergency of 1975. JP's ideals of non-violent resistance, decentralisation, and grassroots democracy remain influential in Indian politics. He is especially remembered in Bihar and across northern India, and his birth anniversary is observed as 'Samajik Nyay Divas' (Social Justice Day). For competitive exams like UPSC and State PSCs, JP is a crucial figure in modern Indian history, particularly regarding the Emergency and the rise of coalition politics.
