Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya
Full Form of JNV
What is JNV?
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) is a system of central government-funded residential schools in India, established under the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education. The schools were launched in 1986 as part of the National Policy on Education (1986) to provide quality modern education to talented children predominantly from rural areas, irrespective of their family’s socioeconomic background. Each district in India (except a few) has at least one JNV, and admissions are based on the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST), a nationwide entrance exam conducted for Class VI students. The schools follow the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum and offer free education, including boarding, lodging, and textbooks, from Class VI to XII. JNVs play a pivotal role in promoting social equity by bridging the urban-rural education gap and nurturing leadership among rural talent. For competitive exam aspirants, studying at a JNV provides a strong academic foundation, especially for engineering, medical, and civil services exams. The schools also emphasize co-curricular activities, community service, and regional integration through the 'migration scheme' where students spend a year in a JNV from another state.
