Joint Forest Zone
Full Form of JFZ
What is JFZ?
A Joint Forest Zone (JFZ) is a designated area under India's Joint Forest Management (JFM) programme, where forest departments and local communities collaborate to manage and conserve forests. The concept emerged from the National Forest Policy of 1988, which emphasised community participation in forest governance. JFZs are typically demarcated in forest-fringe villages of states like Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Within these zones, villagers form Forest Protection Committees (FPCs) that share rights to non-timber forest products and livelihood benefits in exchange for protecting the forest from encroachment and illegal felling. The system has been pivotal in regenerating degraded forests and improving local livelihoods. JFZs are used in policy documents, government orders, and training modules for forest officers. For competitive exams such as the UPSC Civil Services, Indian Forest Service, and state PCS, understanding JFZs is important for questions on environmental governance and sustainable development. The approach balances ecological conservation with social equity, making it a model for participatory natural resource management in India.
