Electronic Data Capture
Full Form of EDC
What is EDC?
Electronic Data Capture (EDC) refers to the technology used in point-of-sale (POS) terminals that securely capture payment card information at the time of a transaction. In India, EDC machines are ubiquitous in retail stores, restaurants, petrol pumps, hospitals, and other commercial establishments, enabling customers to pay using debit, credit, or prepaid cards. These devices encrypt card data and transmit it to the acquiring bank for authorization, playing a critical role in the country’s shift toward a cashless economy. The Reserve Bank of India and the National Payments Corporation of India have mandated specific security standards for EDC terminals, including PCI DSS compliance and the use of EMV chip-enabled cards. With the rapid adoption of digital payments in India, EDC machines have evolved to support contactless payments via NFC and QR codes, often integrated with UPI-based systems. For aspirants of banking examinations such as SBI PO, IBPS, and RBI Grade B, understanding EDC is essential as questions frequently appear on payment systems, acquiring banks, and the role of terminals in card-present transactions. The widespread deployment of EDC machines has significantly reduced cash dependency, improved transaction transparency, and contributed to financial inclusion across urban and rural India.
