Joint Forest Management
Full Form of JFD
What is JFD?
Joint Forest Management (JFD) is a collaborative approach to forest conservation and management in India, involving state forest departments and local communities. Introduced in the late 1980s through a Government of India resolution, it aims to restore degraded forests while enhancing rural livelihoods by sharing responsibilities and benefits. Under JFD, villages form Forest Protection Committees (FPCs) or similar groups that jointly plan, protect, and regenerate forest areas with forest officials. The program is implemented across most Indian states and union territories, guided by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Community members receive rights to collect non-timber forest products and a share of timber revenue, incentivizing sustainable use. JFD is frequently discussed in environmental governance and is a key topic for civil services exams (UPSC) and state forest service examinations, reflecting its importance in balancing ecological conservation with social equity.
