Indian Zonal Laboratory
Full Form of IZL
What is IZL?
The Indian Zonal Laboratory (IZL) is a network of regional research facilities operating under the aegis of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), a premier institution under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Each IZL is strategically located in different biogeographic zones of India—such as the Western Himalayas, Eastern Ghats, and Northeast India—to monitor and study regional biodiversity. These laboratories focus on taxonomic identification, ecological surveys, and conservation genetics of native flora and fauna. IZL scientists regularly conduct field expeditions, document new species, and prepare status reports that inform wildlife management policies. The labs also serve as training centres for postgraduate students and wildlife officials. In the context of competitive examinations like the CSIR-UGC NET (Life Sciences) and UPSC (Environment and Ecology), knowledge of the IZL network is important as it exemplifies India's decentralised approach to biodiversity conservation. The data generated by these labs supports the National Biodiversity Action Plan and contributes to global initiatives such as the IUCN Red List. IZL field stations often partner with state forest departments for local conservation projects, making them integral to India's ecological research infrastructure.
