Indian Zonal Council
Full Form of IZC
What is IZC?
The Indian Zonal Council (IZC) is a statutory advisory body established under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, to promote inter-state cooperation and coordination in India. There are five Zonal Councils—Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Central—each comprising representatives from the states within that zone, along with Union territories and Central government officials. The IZC serves as a platform for discussing common issues such as border disputes, economic development, transport, and security, helping to bridge regional differences and foster administrative synergy. Meetings are held periodically at the zonal level, and the councils also include a Standing Committee for continuous monitoring of interstate matters. In India, these councils are crucial for maintaining federal harmony and implementing centrally sponsored schemes at the regional level. For students preparing for civil services exams (UPSC, state PCS), the IZC is an important topic under Indian polity and inter-state relations, often appearing in questions about cooperative federalism and regional planning.
