International Youth Day
Full Form of IYD
What is IYD?
International Youth Day (IYD) is a United Nations designated day observed annually on 12 August to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of young people as partners in today’s global society. In India, IYD is actively commemorated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, state governments, educational institutions, and youth organisations through seminars, cultural events, skill development workshops, and campaigns focusing on themes such as youth employment, mental health, and climate action. The day serves as a platform for dialogue between policymakers and young Indians, highlighting the nation’s commitment to harnessing its demographic dividend. It is widely referenced in general knowledge sections of competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state public service commissions, where questions about the UN resolution, annual themes, and India’s youth-centric programmes often appear. IYD reinforces the importance of investing in youth for sustainable development and has been observed since 1999, following the UN General Assembly’s endorsement of the World Programme of Action for Youth.
