Interexchange Carrier
Full Form of IXC
What is IXC?
An Interexchange Carrier (IXC) is a telecommunications company that provides long-distance voice and data transmission services between local exchange carriers (LECs). In the Indian telecom landscape, IXCs are the backbone of national and international trunk connectivity, enabling calls to traverse from one city or circle to another. These carriers operate on a wholesale level, leasing capacity to retail providers or directly serving large enterprises. The role of IXCs in India became prominent after the liberalization of the telecom sector in the 1990s, when the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) opened long-distance services to private players such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, and Tata Communications (formerly VSNL). IXCs use a network of fiber optic cables, satellite links, and microwave towers to route traffic seamlessly across state boundaries. Today, with the rise of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and internet-based communication, traditional IXC models are evolving, but they remain critical for ensuring quality of service (QoS) and international gateway operations. For students preparing for exams like GATE (Telecommunications), UPSC, or TRAI recruitment, understanding IXC functions, regulation by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and its distinction from LECs and ILECs is essential. IXCs also play a key role in interoperability between different telecom circles and international roaming agreements.
