Intravenous Quinine
Full Form of IVQ
What is IVQ?
Intravenous Quinine (IVQ) refers to the administration of quinine, a naturally occurring alkaloid derived from cinchona bark, directly into a vein. In India, IVQ is primarily used as a life-saving treatment for severe and complicated falciparum malaria, especially when oral therapy is not feasible due to vomiting, altered consciousness, or multi-organ failure. It is a mainstay in intensive care units and tertiary hospitals across malaria-endemic regions such as Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and the northeastern states. The drug acts by interfering with the malaria parasite's ability to detoxify heme, leading to its death. Given the high prevalence of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum in India, IVQ remains an essential component of national malaria treatment protocols. It is administered under careful cardiac monitoring due to potential side effects like hypoglycemia, arrhythmias, and cinchonism. Medical students and healthcare professionals in India encounter IVQ prominently in pharmacology and medicine curricula, making it a common question topic in NEET PG and AIIMS exams. Understanding its indications, dosing, and adverse effects is critical for clinical practice and board examinations.
