Indian Urban Vehicle
Full Form of IUV
What is IUV?
The Indian Urban Vehicle (IUV) is a category of compact, electric, and multi-utility vehicles specifically designed to address the unique mobility challenges of dense Indian cities. These vehicles are lightweight, have a range of 100-150 km, and can be charged from standard household outlets, making them ideal for last-mile connectivity, shared mobility services, and small-scale commercial deliveries. The Indian government actively promotes IUVs under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) schemes to reduce urban air pollution and dependency on fossil fuels. The concept gained traction after 2020 as part of the Smart Cities Mission and the broader push for sustainable transport. IUVs are expected to play a critical role in reducing traffic congestion and emissions while creating jobs in manufacturing and servicing under the 'Make in India' initiative. For competitive exams such as UPSC, SSC, and Railway Recruitment Boards, questions on IUVs may appear in the context of government policies on electric mobility, urban planning, and climate change mitigation. The adoption of IUVs is also linked to the development of charging infrastructure and battery recycling systems in Indian cities.
