Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (fishing)
Full Form of IUU
What is IUU?
IUU stands for Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing, a term used by international bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to describe fishing activities that violate national or international laws, fail to report catches accurately, or operate outside regulatory frameworks. In India, IUU fishing is a critical concern due to the country's extensive coastline of over 7,500 kilometers and its dependence on marine resources for livelihoods and food security. Indian authorities, including the Coast Guard and the Fisheries Department, actively patrol waters to curb IUU practices, which deplete fish stocks, harm marine biodiversity, and undermine sustainable fisheries management. The problem is especially acute in the Indian Ocean, where unlicensed foreign vessels often encroach into Indian Exclusive Economic Zones. IUU fishing is frequently discussed in policy documents, maritime security briefings, and environmental impact assessments. For competitive exams like UPSC and state fisheries exams, understanding IUU fishing is important for questions on resource conservation, international maritime law, and India's blue economy strategy. The government has implemented schemes like the National Plan of Action to deter IUU activities and promote traceability in seafood exports.
