International Space Station
Full Form of ISS
What is ISS?
The International Space Station (ISS) is a large, habitable artificial satellite that orbits Earth at an average altitude of approximately 400 kilometres. It serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory where international crews conduct experiments in biology, physics, astronomy, and materials science. The ISS is a collaborative project involving five major space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada). In the Indian context, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has utilised the ISS for experiments, including the launch of Indian payloads via commercial agreements. Additionally, India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS) reflect the nation's growing interest in crewed space missions, with the ISS serving as a benchmark for international cooperation and orbital research. The ISS is visible from India as a bright moving object in the night sky, and its continuous habitation since November 2000 makes it a unique platform for long-duration studies. For competitive exams like UPSC, knowledge of the ISS and its scientific contributions is often tested under space technology and international collaborations. The station's modular design, assembled in orbit, exemplifies engineering excellence and global partnerships that transcend political boundaries.
