International Road Union
Full Form of IRU
What is IRU?
The International Road Union (IRU) is a global trade association representing the interests of road transport operators, including bus, coach, taxi, and truck companies. Founded in 1948, it works to promote sustainable mobility, road safety, and efficient cross-border transport. In India, the IRU collaborates with bodies like the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to advocate for policy reforms, simplify customs procedures, and harmonise regulations for international freight movement. The union is particularly active in developing the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) system, a customs transit scheme that speeds up border crossings, which India adopted in 2017 as part of its efforts to boost trade with Central Asia and Europe. IRU reports and standards are frequently referenced in logistics and supply chain management courses in India, and its initiatives are relevant for UPSC aspirants studying India's connectivity projects and international trade frameworks. The organisation also runs training programmes and safety campaigns tailored to the Indian market, addressing challenges such as driver shortages, digitalisation, and decarbonisation. Its role in shaping road transport policy makes it a key entity for students of commerce, economics, and public administration.
