What is IRE?
Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) is a non-thermal, minimally invasive ablation technique used primarily for destroying tumors by delivering high-voltage electrical pulses directly into the target tissue. Unlike thermal methods such as radiofrequency ablation, IRE does not rely on heat, making it particularly suitable for treating lesions near critical structures like blood vessels, bile ducts, and nerves, where heat could cause collateral damage. In India, IRE is gaining traction in specialized oncology centers, especially for treating liver, pancreatic, and kidney tumors that are deemed inoperable or unsuitable for conventional ablation. The procedure involves inserting thin electrodes into the tumor under image guidance, then applying short, intense electric fields that create nanopores in cell membranes, leading to cell death while preserving the extracellular matrix. IRE is typically used when patients cannot undergo surgery or when other ablation methods pose risks. For Indian medical entrance exams like NEET PG or surgical oncology fellowships, IRE is a notable emerging technology that exemplifies advancements in interventional oncology. Its adoption in India is growing, though it remains limited to a few tertiary-care hospitals due to cost and technical expertise requirements. The procedure offers faster recovery and reduced hospital stays compared to open surgery, aligning with the push for precision medicine in the country.
