Interquartile Range
Full Form of IQR
What is IQR?
The Interquartile Range (IQR) is a statistical measure that describes the spread of the middle 50% of a dataset. It is calculated as the difference between the third quartile (Q3) and the first quartile (Q1), effectively capturing the range where the central half of the data lies. In India, the IQR is a fundamental concept taught in mathematics and statistics curricula from Class 9 onwards under the CBSE, ICSE, and various state boards. It is widely used in competitive exams like CUET, JEE Main, and NDA for data interpretation questions, as well as in fields such as economics, psychology, and data science for outlier detection and robust analysis. Unlike range, the IQR is not affected by extreme values, making it a reliable indicator of variability. Students and researchers in India apply IQR to box plots, financial data, and quality control processes. Understanding IQR is essential for mastering descriptive statistics and for any exam that requires data handling skills.
