Internetwork Packet Exchange
Full Form of IPX
What is IPX?
Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) is a networking protocol developed by Novell for use in its NetWare operating system. It operates at the network layer of the OSI model and is responsible for addressing and routing packets between nodes on a local area network (LAN). In India, IPX gained prominence during the 1990s and early 2000s when many educational institutions, government offices, and small businesses adopted Novell NetWare for file and print sharing. It was particularly common in computer labs and corporate networks before the widespread adoption of TCP/IP. IPX is a connectionless protocol, meaning it does not guarantee delivery, and relies on the SPX protocol for reliable transport. Despite its decline in favour of TCP/IP, IPX is still referenced in older Indian computer science curricula and appears in questions on networking fundamentals in entrance exams for courses like BCA, MCA, and engineering. Understanding IPX helps students grasp the evolution of network protocols and the shift from proprietary to open standards. Today, its relevance is mainly historical, but it remains a topic for students studying legacy networking systems.
