What is IP?
Internet Protocol (IP) is a core communications protocol in the Internet Protocol Suite used for relaying datagrams across network boundaries. It provides the fundamental addressing mechanism that enables devices to identify and communicate with each other over the internet or private networks. In India, IP is the backbone of all digital connectivity, from government e-governance portals and banking systems to educational platforms like DIKSHA and corporate intranets. Every device connected to the internet, including smartphones, laptops, and servers, is assigned a unique IP address (IPv4 or IPv6) to facilitate data routing. The protocol is taught extensively in Indian computer science and engineering curricula, particularly in networking courses such as Data Communication, Computer Networks, and subjects covered in GATE, UGC NET, and state-level engineering exams. IP is also central to national initiatives like Digital India and the BharatNet project, which aim to provide high-speed internet to rural areas.
