Indian Ocean Region
Full Form of IOR
What is IOR?
The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) refers to the vast maritime expanse stretching from the eastern coast of Africa through the Middle East and South Asia to the western coast of Australia. For India, the IOR is of paramount strategic importance because it hosts critical sea lanes of communication (SLOCs) through which nearly 90% of the country's trade by volume and 80% of its hydrocarbon imports pass. The region is also a focal point for geopolitical competition, as it includes chokepoints like the Strait of Malacca, Bab-el-Mandeb, and the Hormuz Strait. The Indian Navy actively patrols the IOR to ensure freedom of navigation, counter piracy, and provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The term is routinely used in defence white papers, naval exercises (e.g., Milan), and high-level diplomatic dialogues such as the IORA (Indian Ocean Rim Association) summits. For competitive exams like UPSC, understanding India's IOR policy—including the SAGAR doctrine (Security and Growth for All in the Region)—is essential for questions on geopolitics and national security. The IOR is not merely a geographic concept but a dynamic theatre that shapes India's economic prosperity and military posture.
