Indian Knowledge Systems
Full Form of IKS
What is IKS?
Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) is an interdisciplinary academic framework introduced by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to integrate traditional Indian wisdom into modern curricula. IKS covers diverse fields such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Vedic mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, architecture (Vastu Shastra), and indigenous ecology. It aims to preserve, promote, and research India’s classical and folk knowledge traditions while making them relevant to contemporary education. IKS is implemented through dedicated courses, research centers, and curriculum modules in universities and colleges across India, including the IKS division at AICTE and the IKS cell at the University Grants Commission (UGC). The initiative also supports doctoral research and international collaborations to document and validate ancient texts. IKS is increasingly referenced in competitive exams like UPSC, NET, and state civil services under the ‘Indian Heritage and Culture’ section. By blending epistemic diversity with scientific inquiry, IKS seeks to decolonize the Indian education system and foster pride in indigenous intellectual heritage. Its role extends beyond academics into policymaking, sustainable development, and cultural revival.
