Indian Knowledge Centre
Full Form of IKC
What is IKC?
The Indian Knowledge Centre (IKC) is an institutional framework proposed under the National Education Policy 2020 to systematically preserve, research, and disseminate India's vast repository of traditional knowledge. These centres are envisioned as hubs that bridge ancient wisdom — spanning Ayurveda, astronomy, mathematics, linguistics, and sustainable practices — with modern pedagogy and research. IKCs are being established across universities and research institutes to create multidisciplinary curricula, support documentation of oral traditions, and develop teaching materials in regional languages. They also facilitate collaborations with traditional scholars, artisans, and local communities to ensure authentic transmission of knowledge. In India, IKCs play a pivotal role in decolonizing education by repositioning indigenous epistemologies at par with global knowledge systems. The policy requires every higher education institution to gradually integrate Indian Knowledge Systems, with IKCs acting as nodal agencies. For competitive exams like UPSC and UGC-NET, the IKC concept tests candidates' understanding of the NEP’s implementation strategies and its cultural implications. By institutionalizing indigenous sciences, IKCs aim to foster innovation rooted in India’s civilizational heritage while addressing contemporary challenges such as climate resilience and holistic health.
