Inactivated Influenza Vaccine
Full Form of IIV
What is IIV?
The Inactivated Influenza Vaccine (IIV) is a seasonal vaccine that contains killed influenza virus particles, designed to provide immunity against the most common circulating flu strains. In India, IIV is primarily administered during the pre-monsoon and winter months when influenza outbreaks peak. The vaccine is recommended for high-risk groups including children under five, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions like diabetes or asthma. Public health campaigns by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and state health departments promote IIV to reduce the burden of seasonal flu, which often leads to hospitalizations and school absenteeism. IIV is given as an intramuscular injection and is available at government clinics as part of the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) for certain states, though it is not yet part of the national routine immunization schedule. Medical students and healthcare professionals must understand IIV's contraindications, such as severe egg allergy, and its difference from live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). Exam questions often focus on storage temperature (2-8°C), target populations, and annual revaccination due to viral antigenic drift. The vaccine's role in preventing flu-related complications makes it a cornerstone of public health in India.
