International Humanitarian Law
Full Form of IHL
What is IHL?
International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a set of rules which seek, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not or are no longer participating in the hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare. Often referred to as the laws of war or the law of armed conflict, IHL is primarily derived from the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols. In India, IHL is relevant in the context of internal security operations such as those in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states, where Indian armed forces are expected to operate within the constraints of both domestic law and international obligations. India is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions and has incorporated certain principles into its own military manuals and training. The subject is studied in law schools, defence academies, and by officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. For competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services or law entrance tests, questions on IHL often appear under international relations or human rights sections. Understanding IHL is essential for anyone involved in policy, military, or humanitarian work in India.
