What is IGI?
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is the primary international airport serving the National Capital Region of Delhi, India. Located in Palam, about 16 kilometres southwest of central Delhi, it is named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. IGI is the busiest airport in India by passenger traffic and cargo volume, handling over 70 million passengers annually before the pandemic. Operated by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) under a public-private partnership with the Airports Authority of India, it comprises three functioning terminals: Terminal 1 for domestic low-cost carriers, Terminal 2 for select domestic flights, and Terminal 3 for international and full-service domestic operations. The airport serves as a major hub for airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, connecting India to destinations globally. In competitive examinations such as UPSC, SSC, and banking exams, questions frequently appear about IGI's ranking, expansion projects, and its role in India's aviation infrastructure. The airport is also known for its modern facilities, including aerobridges, lounges, and the Delhi Metro Airport Express Line, which offers rapid transit to the city. IGI's significance extends beyond travel; it is a critical node in the national logistics network and a symbol of India's growing global connectivity.
