Indian Barge and Petroleum Company
Full Form of IBP
What is IBP?
The Indian Barge and Petroleum Company (IBP) was a public sector undertaking in India primarily involved in the marketing and distribution of petroleum products. Originally incorporated in 1970 as a government-owned enterprise, IBP played a key role in ensuring fuel supply across the country, especially in rural and remote areas. It operated a network of retail outlets, depots, and infrastructure for petrol, diesel, lubricants, and LPG. IBP was one of the major oil marketing companies in India alongside Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL). The company was headquartered in Kolkata and had a notable presence in eastern India. In 2006, IBP was merged with Indian Oil Corporation to streamline operations and strengthen the public sector oil distribution network. Today, IBP is no longer an independent entity, but its legacy continues under IOC. For competitive exams like UPSC and banking, IBP is an important historical PSU that illustrates the evolution of India’s energy sector.
