Indian Astronomical Observatory
Full Form of IAO
What is IAO?
The Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) is a high-altitude observatory located at Hanle in the Ladakh region of India. Operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), it is one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, situated at an elevation of about 4,500 metres. The IAO was established to provide India with a world-class facility for optical, infrared, and gamma-ray astronomy, taking advantage of the clear, dry, and dark skies of the Himalayas. It houses the 2-metre Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT), which is remotely operated from Bengaluru. The observatory plays a critical role in research areas such as stellar astrophysics, galaxy evolution, and transient events like supernovae. It is used by astronomers and researchers from across India and international collaborators. For students and aspirants of competitive exams like JEST, GATE, and UPSC, knowledge of the IAO highlights India's contributions to space science and technology. The observatory also supports educational outreach programmes, making it a significant asset for the Indian scientific community.
