Herpes Zoster Virus
Full Form of HZV
What is HZV?
Herpes Zoster Virus (HZV) is the pathogen responsible for causing shingles, a painful skin condition resulting from the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which initially causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in nerve tissues and can reactivate years later, typically due to aging, stress, or immunosuppression. In India, HZV is a significant health concern among the elderly and those with compromised immune systems, including patients with HIV/AIDS or those undergoing chemotherapy. The infection presents as a blistering rash along a dermatome, often accompanied by severe pain, which can lead to complications like postherpetic neuralgia. Diagnosis is clinical, but laboratory tests can confirm. Treatment involves antiviral medications, pain management, and vaccination for prevention. HZV is commonly discussed in Indian medical curricula, especially in dermatology and infectious disease modules, and is relevant for exams such as NEET PG and AIIMS MBBS. Awareness about HZV vaccination is growing in India to reduce the burden of shingles in older adults, with the government and healthcare organizations promoting immunization programs.
