Gujarat Waterways Yojana
Full Form of GWY
What is GWY?
The Gujarat Waterways Yojana (GWY) is a state government initiative launched to develop and modernise inland waterways across Gujarat. The scheme focuses on creating a network of navigable rivers, canals, and backwaters for cargo and passenger transport, as well as irrigation and tourism purposes. It is part of Gujarat's broader infrastructure push under the Sagarmala project and aims to reduce road congestion, lower logistics costs, and promote eco-friendly water transport. The yojana is implemented by the Gujarat Maritime Board and the state water resources department. It covers major rivers such as the Narmada, Tapi, Sabarmati, and the Gulf of Khambhat region. The GWY also includes dredging, construction of jetties, terminals, and lock gates to ensure year-round navigability. In rural areas, the scheme supports small-scale water transport for farmers and local businesses. The GWY is relevant for competitive exams like GPSC (Gujarat Public Service Commission) and state-level civil services where questions on Gujarat's development schemes appear. The initiative aligns with the national Jal Marg Vikas project and the government's commitment to multimodal transport.
