Graft-versus-Host
Full Form of GVH
What is GVH?
GVH stands for Graft-versus-Host, a medical condition typically referred to as Graft-versus-Host disease (GVHD). It occurs when donor immune cells (the graft) from a bone marrow or stem cell transplant recognize the recipient's body (the host) as foreign and mount an immune response against it. In India, GVH is a critical complication in allogeneic transplants, which are increasingly performed for blood cancers like leukemia and thalassemia. It can affect the skin, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and other organs. Acute GVH appears within 100 days post-transplant, while chronic GVH can last months or years. Management involves immunosuppressive drugs and careful monitoring. Indian hospitals like AIIMS, Tata Memorial Centre, and CMC Vellore have protocols to minimize GVH risk. For students pursuing MBBS or medical entrance exams, understanding GVH is essential in the immunology and hematology sections, as questions often ask about its pathophysiology or prevention strategies.
