Gram Udyog Parishad
Full Form of GUP
What is GUP?
Gram Udyog Parishad (GUP) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in India, established to promote and develop village industries and rural entrepreneurship. It focuses on creating sustainable employment opportunities in rural areas by supporting traditional crafts, handlooms, khadi, and other cottage industries. GUP operates through district-level offices and coordinates with state agencies to implement schemes like the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). It provides training, financial assistance, and marketing support to rural artisans and small entrepreneurs. The council plays a crucial role in the government's vision of 'Make in India' and 'Vocal for Local' by encouraging local production and reducing urban migration. GUP is commonly referenced in government reports, MSME policy documents, and rural development schemes. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PCS, understanding GUP's functions and its link to rural economy is important for questions on Indian economic development and social welfare programs.
