Graded Quality Product
Full Form of GQP
What is GQP?
Graded Quality Product (GQP) refers to a certification scheme under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in India, mandated by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It is part of the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued by the Indian government to ensure that specific products—such as toys, footwear, and household appliances—meet minimum quality and safety standards before being sold in the market. The GQP label is granted after rigorous testing and inspection by BIS-licensed laboratories. This system was introduced to curb the influx of substandard or unsafe goods, protect consumer interests, and promote domestic manufacturing aligned with the 'Make in India' initiative. GQP certification is commonly required for products listed under various QCOs, and manufacturers must display the GQP mark on packaging to legally sell those items. For students of commerce, engineering, or regulatory affairs, understanding GQP is essential for exams like UGC NET Commerce, Indian Economic Service, and MBA courses covering quality management or government policies. The scheme also aligns with India's push for self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by raising production standards.
