What is GPE?
Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) is the energy stored in an object due to its position in a gravitational field. In simple terms, it is the work done to lift an object against gravity. On Earth, GPE is calculated as mass × gravitational acceleration × height (mgh). This concept is fundamental in physics, especially in mechanics and energy conservation. In the Indian education system, GPE is introduced in Class 9 and Class 11 under the work-energy theorem and is extensively used in competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and board exams. Students encounter it in problems involving falling objects, pendulums, satellites, and roller coasters. Understanding GPE helps in grasping broader topics like kinetic energy, potential energy, and the law of conservation of mechanical energy. It is also applied in real-life scenarios such as hydroelectric power generation, where water stored at a height possesses GPE that converts to electrical energy. For Indian exam aspirants, mastering GPE is crucial as it appears in numerical and conceptual questions requiring calculation of energy changes, work done, and velocity at different heights.
