Gross National Happiness
Full Form of GNH
What is GNH?
Gross National Happiness (GNH) is a holistic development philosophy that prioritizes the well-being and happiness of citizens over mere economic growth. Originating in Bhutan in the 1970s under King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, GNH is built on four pillars: sustainable and equitable socio-economic development, environmental conservation, preservation and promotion of culture, and good governance. These pillars are further broken down into nine domains, including living standards, health, education, time use, and psychological well-being. In India, GNH is often discussed as an alternative to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in policy circles, especially in the context of sustainable development, mental health, and grassroots governance. While not officially adopted, the concept influences Indian state-level initiatives like happiness policies in Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, and it appears in debates on inclusive growth. The term is frequently referenced in academic papers, think-tank reports, and by Indian NGOs advocating for well-being metrics. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, GNH is a keyword in topics related to sustainable development, ethics in governance, and Bhutan-India bilateral relations. Understanding GNH helps students appreciate alternative measures of national progress beyond material wealth.
