Gender Inequality Index
Full Form of GII
What is GII?
The Gender Inequality Index (GII) is a composite metric developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to measure gender-based disparities in three critical dimensions: reproductive health, empowerment, and economic activity. It is part of the Human Development Report and is used globally to track progress toward gender equality. In India, the GII is closely monitored by policymakers, researchers, and civil society organisations to identify areas where women lag behind men, such as maternal mortality, parliamentary representation, and labour force participation. The index scores range from 0 (perfect equality) to 1 (extreme inequality), allowing comparisons across countries and over time. India's GII ranking has shown gradual improvement in recent years, yet significant challenges remain, particularly in rural areas and among marginalised communities. The index is frequently cited in Indian competitive examinations like UPSC, state civil services, and UGC NET, where questions on human development indices are common. Understanding the GII helps students and professionals grasp the broader context of social justice and inclusive growth in India.
