Gender Identity Disorder
Full Form of GID
What is GID?
Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is a medical diagnosis historically used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to describe individuals who experience significant distress or impairment due to a marked incongruence between their experienced or expressed gender and the gender assigned at birth. In India, the term was referenced in clinical psychology and psychiatric settings until the DSM-5 replaced it with 'Gender Dysphoria' in 2013, shifting focus from identity as a disorder to distress as a treatable condition. The diagnosis played a key role in the development of treatment protocols, including hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries. In the Indian context, GID was often used in mental health assessments, though its use has declined with increased awareness and legal recognition of transgender rights, notably following the Supreme Court's 2014 NALSA judgment affirming the rights of transgender persons. Today, the term is still encountered in older medical literature and some Indian textbooks, making it relevant for psychology and medical students preparing for exams like the UGC NET or NEET PG. Understanding GID is essential for grasping the evolution of gender-related healthcare and the destigmatization of transgender identities.
