Group Discussion
Full Form of GD
What is GD?
Group Discussion (GD) is a structured interactive process where a small group of individuals, typically 6-15, exchange ideas, opinions, and arguments on a given topic within a limited time. It is widely used in India as a screening tool for admissions to management institutes, university courses, and corporate recruitment. The GD tests a candidate's communication skills, leadership ability, teamwork, logical reasoning, and subject knowledge. In the Indian education system, top business schools like the IIMs include GD as a key stage in their selection process. Government exam bodies such as UPSC and SSC also conduct GDs for certain posts. The format usually involves a neutral moderator, and participants are evaluated on content, clarity, and interpersonal dynamics. GD is especially relevant for MBA aspirants preparing for CAT, XAT, or CMAT, where a strong performance can significantly boost overall chances. While some institutions have replaced GDs with personal interviews or written tests, many continue to rely on them for group dynamics assessment. Practicing mock GDs and staying updated on current affairs are common preparation strategies. In summary, GD remains a cornerstone of India's competitive selection landscape.
