Global Hunger Index
Full Form of GHI
What is GHI?
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a comprehensive tool used to measure and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels. It is published annually by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe. The GHI ranks countries based on a score derived from four key indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality. In the Indian context, the GHI is widely referenced in policy discussions, media reports, and academic research to assess the state of food security and malnutrition. It is particularly relevant for civil services and competitive exams like UPSC, where questions on India's ranking and performance often appear. The index highlights persistent challenges in rural and urban areas, prompting government initiatives such as the National Nutrition Mission. While India has shown gradual improvement in recent years, the GHI continues to underline disparities in access to nutritious food, especially among children and women. Understanding the GHI and its indicators is essential for students of economics, public health, and development studies. The report also serves as a benchmark for international comparisons and SDG goal 2 (Zero Hunger) progress.
