Ganga Gram Project
Full Form of GGP
What is GGP?
The Ganga Gram Project (GGP) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India under the Namami Gange programme, aimed at the holistic development of villages situated along the banks of the River Ganga. Launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the project focuses on ensuring open defecation-free (ODF) status, solid and liquid waste management, water conservation, and the provision of basic amenities such as toilets, drainage, and clean drinking water in these villages. The GGP is implemented in convergence with other central schemes like Swachh Bharat Mission, MGNREGA, and the Rural Water Supply Programme. It envisions turning select villages into model 'Ganga Grams' that serve as examples of sustainable rural development. The project is relevant for aspirants preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, state PCS, and CDS, as questions on river conservation and government schemes frequently appear in general studies and current affairs sections. By improving sanitation and environmental health, the GGP also contributes to the broader goal of rejuvenating the Ganga ecosystem.
