General Educational Development
Full Form of GED
What is GED?
The General Educational Development (GED) is a globally recognized test that certifies high school‑level academic skills. In India, it is primarily used by individuals who have not completed formal secondary schooling but wish to demonstrate equivalent knowledge for higher education or employment. Administered by the American Council on Education, the GED covers four subject areas: reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science, and social studies. Though not as common as the Indian secondary board exams (e.g., CBSE or state boards), the GED is increasingly accepted by Indian universities and employers as proof of basic educational competency. It is especially relevant for adult learners, school dropouts, and expatriates returning to India who need a flexible path to certification. The test can be taken online or at approved testing centres, and its worldwide recognition makes it a viable alternative for students pursuing overseas education. For competitive exams like UPSC or bank PO, a GED may be accepted if it is equivalent to Class 12, though candidates should verify individual eligibility criteria. The GED thus offers a second chance for academic and career progression in India’s evolving educational landscape.
