General Body Meeting
Full Form of GBM
What is GBM?
A General Body Meeting (GBM) is a formal gathering of all members of an organization, club, or institution to discuss key issues, make decisions, and elect office bearers. In the Indian context, GBMs are widely used in student organizations, professional associations, cooperative societies, resident welfare associations, and corporate bodies. These meetings serve as the primary platform for democratic participation where every member has an equal voice. Typically, GBMs follow a structured agenda comprising review of previous minutes, financial reports, updates on ongoing projects, and open floor discussions. The decision taken during a GBM is binding on the organization. In Indian colleges, GBMs are especially common for student councils, cultural clubs, and technical committees, often held at the start or end of the academic year. They are also mandatory for registered societies under the Societies Registration Act. For competitive exams like UPSC and MBA entrance tests, understanding the functioning of a GBM helps in answering questions on organizational behaviour and governance. The term is used across formal meeting notices, minutes of meetings, and institutional calendars. A well-conducted GBM ensures transparency, accountability, and collective ownership among members, fostering a culture of participation and leadership.
