File Verification Unit
Full Form of FVU
What is FVU?
The File Verification Unit (FVU) is a specialized wing within the Income Tax Department of India, operating under the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru. Its primary role is to scrutinize and verify the information submitted in income tax returns (ITRs) against the data available from other sources such as Form 26AS, TDS returns, and third-party reports. The FVU ensures that discrepancies, mismatches, or errors in the filed returns are identified and resolved before the final processing. This unit plays a crucial part in maintaining the integrity of the tax system and reducing manual intervention. The FVU is used during the annual ITR filing cycle, especially after April when returns are processed. Taxpayers may receive notices if their return is selected for verification by the FVU. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, or banking, questions on the role of FVU in tax administration are common, as it reflects the government's digital and efficiency-driven initiatives.
