Free Software Foundation
Full Form of FSF
What is FSF?
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1985 by Richard Stallman to promote computer user freedom and define free software. Free software refers to the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. In India, the FSF has played a significant role in fostering the open-source movement, particularly through the GNU project and the Linux operating system. Many Indian educational institutions and government initiatives, such as the National Knowledge Network and the use of open-source software in e-governance, have been influenced by FSF's principles. The FSF is referenced in computer science textbooks, IT policy documents, and during debates on digital sovereignty. For students preparing for competitive exams like GATE, UPSC, and banking exams, questions on free software and the FSF are common in the computer awareness sections. The foundation also organizes campaigns and provides legal support to protect free software licenses in India. Its annual conferences and local user groups help propagate the free software philosophy across Indian tech communities.
