What is OSI?
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework used to understand and standardize the functions of a telecommunication or computing system without regard to its underlying internal structure and technology. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1984, it divides network communication into seven distinct layers: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application. In India, the OSI model is a fundamental topic in computer science and information technology curricula at schools, colleges, and competitive exams like GATE, UGC NET, and NIELIT. It helps students and professionals grasp how data travels across networks, from hardware-level transmission to application-level interactions. The model is widely referenced in Indian tech job interviews and networking certifications such as CCNA. While the TCP/IP model is more commonly used in real-world internet communication, the OSI model remains essential for academic understanding and troubleshooting network issues.
