Foundation Programme Examination
Full Form of FPE
What is FPE?
The Foundation Programme Examination (FPE) is the entry-level assessment conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for students aspiring to pursue the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course. It replaced the earlier Common Proficiency Test (CPT) in 2017 as part of the revised CA curriculum. The FPE is typically taken by students after completing their Class 12 board examinations and serves as the first step toward becoming a CA. The exam comprises four subjects: Principles and Practice of Accounting, Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting, Business Mathematics and Logical Reasoning, and Business Economics and Business and Commercial Knowledge. Conducted twice a year in May/June and November/December, the FPE is a computer-based objective test of 400 marks. In the Indian context, clearing the FPE is mandatory for registering with the ICAI and proceeding to the Intermediate level of the course. The exam is highly relevant for commerce students across the country, as it opens the door to one of the most prestigious professional qualifications in India. Aspirants often prepare rigorously, using ICAI study material and mock tests. The FPE is a critical milestone for thousands of candidates each year, determining their eligibility to advance in the CA program. Its role in standardizing foundational knowledge makes it a cornerstone of professional accounting education in India.
