Common Proficiency Test
Full Form of CPT
What is CPT?
The Common Proficiency Test (CPT) was the entry-level examination for the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course in India, conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). It served as the first step for students aspiring to become chartered accountants, testing their foundational knowledge in accounting, mercantile laws, general economics, and quantitative aptitude. CPT was typically taken after completing Class 12 (or equivalent) and was held twice a year in June and December. The exam comprised four sections with multiple-choice questions, each carrying 50 marks, totaling 200 marks. Candidates had to score a minimum of 30% in each section and 50% overall to pass. However, from July 2017 onwards, ICAI replaced CPT with the CA Foundation course, which introduced a new pattern with both objective and subjective papers. Despite its discontinuation, CPT remains a landmark examination in Indian commerce education, as it laid the groundwork for the rigorous CA curriculum. For competitive exams like CA, understanding the evolution from CPT to CA Foundation is frequently asked in business and accountancy-related interviews.
